This is a set of eight workbooks aimed at supporting the learning of those predominantly undertaking the Learning Disability Awards Framework (LDAF) certificate titled 'Working with people with learning disabilities'. The workbooks, which are accredited by BILD, are aimed at staff working towards S/NVQ awards who have direct contact with people with learning disabilities.
Each workbook is very clear in its intent with concise learning outcomes and thoughtful activities. They are underpinned by a value base that is strongly linked to a person-centred approach. The topics covered are all relevant to working with people with learning disabilities in most settings.
Although the workbooks may not be directly relevant to learning disability nurses, the following parts could be useful. In the 'Handling Information' publication, for example, the different types of documentation are outlined, while the 'Partnership' section has some valuable points and learning for all workers. The 'Risk/Risk Assessment' section is useful, particularly for junior qualified staff and the 'Person Centred Assessment' is not only very topical but easily applicable in the way it is discussed.
Although the general content of the workbooks is not necessarily new, the format and the way in which it is devised is the workbook's strength.
